Encoding

To encode something is to change it into a digital format and using a specific 'codec' for a particular use or application. A example is to encode an original high resolution video file into an Mpeg2 format file so that it can be used to create a DVD video disc. A file may be encoded to be used on the internet, or within a Powerpoint presentation.
